In the summer of 2000, Software Developpers Maxon GmbH asked us if we would like to try and make a short film with the soon-to-be newest version of their 3D animation program Cinema4D XL.
Having complete freedom in the contents of this project, and having the actual developpers of the program offer you their rendering capabilities for use, of course we immediately agreed on this dreamjob. The result is this peculiar piece of storytelling called 'the Joust'.
Having a tight deadline on this project, since the short would have to be finished before Cinema4D XL r6 was released, we got to work immediately. We decided not to try and come up with a good plot for the piece, rather we dreamt up a bizarre situation, a single scene, and worked outwards from that.
This resulted in a piece of animation people either hate because there's no clear plot or clue, or love because it urges them to make sense of it themselves. We ourselves are quite satisfied with the overall atmosphere of the piece, as this was one of our main interests in creating it. Also, it was our first cooperation as Happy Ship and at that a pleasant experience alltogether.
